Tropical hue. Deep watery blue hues are among my favorites for a bedroom. The slight green undertones give a bit of warmth that a true blue lacks. It's also a nice choice if you happen to associate the color with a vacation spent someplace warm lush and tropical. For the ceiling I went with a crisp and light greenish-gray and the trim color is a slightly cool off-white.
A styled nightstand makes your bedroom look complete. Keep only essential items here such as a lamp clock and book and decorative details like a dish to hold your jewelry or a memento. Keep this area clean and dust-free as you don't want to wake up to a mess or breathe in allergens while you sleep. The interior style of your bedroom should guide you in your choice of bedside items. A coastal-inspired bedroom could have lush green tropical leaves in a glass bottle on top of a stack of books and a maritime-inspired clock for example. Boho bedrooms might feature a small arrangement of brightly colored flowers and a string of beads. Just don't be overly obvious in your approach to themes.
Orange above. If you prefer to wake up with a happy jolt try a bold orange-gold color on the ceiling. An orange ceiling will intensify the blue of the skies outside as blue and orange are complementary colors. With such a strong color on the ceiling I'd go with light and warm neutrals for the walls and trim.
Step stool. A repurposed step stool is a smart budget-friendly and space-saving substitute for a night table. Whether designed for a child's room the kitchen or the garage stools often have small proportions that are good for small spaces. A typical step stool measures 15 to 18 inches wide and about 21 inches high making it a good fit for many beds. Tip: Since a table lamp might take over much of the surface area of your step stool consider installing a wall sconce above it instead. That way you'll have room on the stool to place books reading glasses or a vase. If your bedroom allows space pair the stool with a similar-size furniture piece on the other side of the bed.
Create a peaceful atmosphere. What would a peaceful bedroom look and feel like to you? Consider whether there's a certain color (like vivid turquoise) or object (like a vase of fresh flowers) that really brings to mind the mood you want to create. Only bring in objects with the intention of cultivating peaceful restorative feelings. Take action: Take some time to sit quietly in your refreshed space and list the colors objects and activities you'd like to invite more of into your room. Pick one item on your list and take a step toward making it a reality. For example if you'd like to paint your bedroom a more soothing hue take a trip to the paint store to pick up swatches. If you'd like to incorporate meditation into your nightly routine create a quiet corner with cushions where you can practice.
Take your time. Great design takes a while and usually requires refining before you come up with the perfect plan for your lifestyle. Don't rush through the design — it's worth taking a little extra time up front to make sure you have a more efficient and functional plan in the end. The truth is great design doesn't necessarily mean a space that's overly complex and expensive to build. A space that functions better costs less to build is more efficient to run and is easier to maintain can be an outstanding example of great design.
