Connect with the outdoors. While this might not be feasible in all climates connecting a room with the outdoors is a great way to make the space feel larger and admit more natural light. If your bedroom is on the ground floor (or is on the second story and has an adjacent terrace) adding a set of French doors can instantly increase visual space.
Keep privacy in mind. It's always nice when you can leave the bedroom door open without forsaking all of your privacy. The small foyer in this example provides separation from the family room. I always try to avoid designing a layout in which you look directly into the bedroom from a more public space like a great room kitchen or family room.
Warm modern. Keep a clean minimalist look from being too cold with a stroke of fiery red or orange. Here a wide striped bedcover echoes the color in an oversize painting. If a painting of this magnitude is beyond your current budget consider stretching a length of bold fabric on stretchers meant for canvas (find them in art stores). Choose a simple platform-style bed and slim task lamps then fill out the room with a healthy potted plant and a vase of flowers.
Cozy rustic. Raw unfinished wood is key to this look but you don't need to splurge on a big piece to make it work. Use a plain wood slice (find it in a crafts store) as a tray to hold bedside necessities repurpose a wood stump as a table or bring in a few rustic wooden boxes as bedroom storage. Create warmth with cozy patchwork quilts wool blankets and faux fur pillows — and if you have a pair of cowboy boots be sure to leave them out on display.
Dresser or chest. Rather than restricting your night-table furniture to the small or low profile you might go bold with a relatively large piece of furniture like a dresser or chest of drawers. This can provide much-needed extra storage particularly in a narrow bedroom. The key with a larger piece is to create balance. When the bed is placed in the middle of the wall add another large piece of furniture to the other side; a second dresser or a desk typically will work. Be sure both pieces are similar in height and width to create a more symmetrical look. Adding lamps of the same height on either side of the bed can add to the harmonious effect when your night tables don't match. Tip: If you opt for two different lamps and they are not exactly the same height place one or two books beneath the shorter lamp to give it the extra height.
Savor and relax. Imagine doing a few gentle stretches or yoga poses before bed lighting a scented candle and sipping some chamomile tea while you write in your journal. There are no to-do lists or pinging phones vying for your attention. You can simply be. Imagine how easy it would be to gradually unwind release the tension of your day and ease into a restful deep restorative sleep in a space free of clutter and distractions. Once the busyness of the day is done make time to simply relax in your newly cleared space.
