Keep privacy in mind. It's always nice when you can leave the bedroom door open without forsaking all of your privacy. The small foyer in this example provides separation from the family room. I always try to avoid designing a layout in which you look directly into the bedroom from a more public space like a great room kitchen or family room.
Embrace your whimsical side and opt for a chair as your night table. This look works particularly well when just one side of a bed has room for a nightstand — though it also looks adorable when you double up with chairs on both sides of the bed. Tip: For added interest select a chair that has a different texture from the other textiles in the room. For instance you might choose velvet against silk. It's also fun to choose a color that is different from but coordinates with the other colors in the room as in this bedroom. Add a hard tray or book on top of the seat of your chair to create a sturdy surface for your bedside knickknacks.
Serene in green. If you like the idea of a bold ceiling color but find that orange is a bit too zesty for you try a more soothing hue such as green. This green is still vibrant but because it picks up on the natural verdant hues out the window it isn't quite as punchy as the previous palette. A super soft sage green on the wall bridges the ceiling color and the pure white trim nicely.
Boho glam. Pick a classic decorator favorite (like the upholstered bed with nailhead trim shown here) to build the room around then mix and match accessories at whim. Bamboo blinds and colorful printed bedding paired with a glass-top table and a fun framed print add up to a laid-back yet glamorous look.
Lovely lavender. Light-to-medium purple shades are thought to ease our stress levels. If you could use a relaxing atmosphere in your bedroom give a lavender or lilac hue a try. I suggest sticking to a shade that is fairly pure or saturated rather than one with an abundance of gray in it. A heavily grayed-out purple or lavender can feel gloomy especially on overcast days.
Savor and relax. Imagine doing a few gentle stretches or yoga poses before bed lighting a scented candle and sipping some chamomile tea while you write in your journal. There are no to-do lists or pinging phones vying for your attention. You can simply be. Imagine how easy it would be to gradually unwind release the tension of your day and ease into a restful deep restorative sleep in a space free of clutter and distractions. Once the busyness of the day is done make time to simply relax in your newly cleared space.
