Old-world comfort. Plump cushions and deep bedcovers are pure luxury. The patina of age on a mirror paired with full-length drapes and a personal collection of antiques call to mind venerable old European hotels. Silvery gray-blue paint plush wall-to-wall carpeting and creamy bedding are a serene match for this look.

Take your time. Great design takes a while and usually requires refining before you come up with the perfect plan for your lifestyle. Don't rush through the design — it's worth taking a little extra time up front to make sure you have a more efficient and functional plan in the end. The truth is great design doesn't necessarily mean a space that's overly complex and expensive to build. A space that functions better costs less to build is more efficient to run and is easier to maintain can be an outstanding example of great design.

Refined feminine. Crisp black and white stripes paired with soft misty blue create a chic elegant look that is easy to love. Keep accessories pared down and simple with favorite bags and jewelry on display and a few simply framed art prints on the wall. Bring in delicious texture with a cuddly mohair throw and smooth sateen sheets.

Boho glam. Pick a classic decorator favorite (like the upholstered bed with nailhead trim shown here) to build the room around then mix and match accessories at whim. Bamboo blinds and colorful printed bedding paired with a glass-top table and a fun framed print add up to a laid-back yet glamorous look.

When white feels right. For many people white is the only color they'll ever consider in a bathroom and it's not hard to see why — it can look so clean and fresh. But there are ways to make your white stand out from the rest. Here hints of black in the dark grout and fixtures are points of difference. Subtle but lovely features can inject enough difference into an all-white room to make it interesting: a signature circular mirror well-cared-for plants and a designer wood stool in this case. Textured tiles also bring depth to an all-white palette.

In place of a vanity stool. Another place you might put your personal towels is in a recess where a vanity stool might otherwise go. If you have the space and find you rarely sit down there park a rack there and always have a towel within reach after washing your hands. A separate towel rack on the wall offers ample room for dry towels to warm while their user is showering and for damp towels to dry out.

Tool chests are not just for the handy. They can be a solid piece of furniture with ample storage. Their typical sizes — 18 to 48 inches wide and in a variety of heights and depths — can easily fit the space next to a bed. Most tool chests come in a glossy color — red and black being the most common — and can be purchased for less than $100. Or perhaps you have one in your garage just waiting to be repurposed. Either way a tool chest is a multifunctional storage piece that can add character and quirk to your bedroom. Tip: Try a tool chest as a nightstand in a kid's room. The bright colors multiple drawers and small scale can add useful storage and a pop of color to your child or teen's room.

Vintage charm. If you can't pass up a flea market or "junktique" shop without running in this look is for you. Collect what catches your eye and your heartstrings without worrying whether the it will fit perfectly — after all you can always paint it. Having one modern print in the mix whether on cushions or a re-covered chair is a great way to keep this look feeling fresh and current.
